MAD MAX
Interview with Jürgen Breforth (guitar)
Interview by Guillaume

There are just a few days left before the release of the new album, « Night of the white rock ». How do you feel ? Anxious, excited. ?
To be honest, we are very exited! The reviews from all over europe are unbelievable - it's an overwhelming response from fans and media! We're very thankful for that!

Do you plan to compose and release other Mad Max albums in the future ?
From now on there will be a new Mad Max album on a regular basis - promise!

How did you get in touch with the AOR Heaven record company ?
Michael Voss - singer, producer, guitarist and songwriter of Mad Max - did a couple of productions for AOR Heaven and was very satisfied with their work. So the guys from AOR Heaven were our first option and they loved the songs we presented to them.

The original Mad Max line-up has been reformed in order to record this new album. How was it to work all together again ?
To have the four of us bandmembers back together again was like a dream come true.
We are very good friends and that makes the life in this special band very easy.

The alchemy between the band's members seems to have worked perfectly since this album is, in my opinion, one of your bests. Do you agree with that ?
I absolutely agree with you - there definitely is a special vibe on this album that captures all the good feelings and moments we had doing this album.

Michael Voss' voice is very powerful and emotional on this album. Getting older seems to make his voice even better ! Do you share my opinion ?
Michael did a great job on "Night of white rock". When Michael and I did the songwriting together we knew exactly what we wanted to do on this album. There was no compromise necessary. It all came right from the heart and that's something you'll hear on the vocals.

What does differenciate the Mad Max of « Stormchild » album and the Mad Max of « Night of the white rock » album ?
The main difference is basically that "Night of white rock" is a christian rock album. Concerning the lyrics, the earlier Mad Max albums are dealing more or less with typical rock lyrics. This time all the lyrics are mainly influenced by a christian sight of the world.

I saw on your website that you plan to play some concerts to support the new album. Is there any chance that you come in France ? -
We would really love to play a couple of shows in France. We did shows over there supporting Pretty maids in the late 80ies and it was fabulous. Hopefully the french fans like the "Night of white rock" album and invite us for a couple of shows. We're ready for France!

Let's imagine I do not know anything concerning white rock. How would you describe this style to me ?
"White rock" is melodic rock with christian lyrics. Rock magazines and fans originally used the expression "white metal", but we thought, for MAD MAX the better expression was "white rock" - we loved that and even used it for the album title.

On your website we can read : « The plans to do a christian rock album existed quite a long time ». But you could have done it on « Mad Max » or « Stormchild » for example. Why didn't you do it at the time ?
It basically all started after the "Night of passion" album - we toured with the guys from Stryper and during that period we met guys like Joshua Perahia and Ken Tanplin - big names in the christian rock community. We loved their positive music and their inspiration. But as you know, Mad Max split after the "Night of passion" album. In the years to come after that split there never came the right moment - now everything felt right!

Then, your musical style is said to be « melodic rock with chrsitian lyrics ». (I saw it on your website once again).
Why do you put the emphasis on « with christian lyrics » ? Is it in order do differenciate Mad Max from the other melodic rock bands, or in order to emphasize on the fact that religion is something very important for you ?

For Mad Max both sides are very important - the kind of melodic rock we play is the music we love and listen to with bands like Dokken or White lion - with our lyrics we don't want to preach something. What we want to do is to give the listener an option to think about - the option is "to believe in something" - you can call it God, Jesus or a higher spirit - it's up to everybody to find his own interpretation. This special combination of the music and the lyrics is the unique Mad Max trademark.

I'm a great fan of German hard rock. Which German bands do you appreciate the most ?
Off course we are very good frieds with the guys from Jaded heart.

To conclude, is there any word you would like to say to the visitors of our website ?
I want to thank all the Mad Max fans in France for their support!
Hopefully we can see us all on our forthcoming european tour in april/may!

Thanks Jurgen !
